Concreting for an established suburb, not a new estate
Aging concrete on 1970s-90s homes
Hoppers Crossing grew fastest between the early 1970s and the 1990s, and it’s now fully built out — there’s no new estate land left. That changes the concreting work here. Where Tarneit and Point Cook are about pouring driveways on fresh estate lots, Hoppers Crossing is largely about replacing concrete that’s reached the end of its life: original driveways that have cracked and lifted, paths that have become trip hazards, and slabs poured to 1980s standards that never handled the reactive clay properly in the first place.

The other half of the work is the suburb’s steady turnover. With no new land, growth comes from knockdown-rebuilds and renovations of the existing stock — which means new driveways, extension slabs and outdoor areas going in as older homes are updated. The same reactive clay — with older concrete on top of it
Hoppers Crossing sits on the same reactive clay that runs under Werribee and the rest of the western plains — flat volcanic ground, classified Class M to Class H under AS 2870, that swells when wet and shrinks when it dries. It’s the reason so much of the suburb’s original concrete has cracked: a lot of it was poured decades ago on bases that weren’t prepared for how much this ground moves. That’s exactly why a like-for-like replacement isn’t the answer — repouring a driveway the same way it was done in 1985 just repeats the failure. We rebuild the base properly: a compacted crushed-rock sub-base, reinforcement held at the correct height on bar chairs, adequate slab thickness, control joints placed to let the slab move, and the right falls so water runs off rather than pooling. On this ground, the base is what decides whether the new concrete lasts 5 years or 40.

On established homes, the vehicle crossover — where the driveway meets the road — is often the original one, decades old and cracked. If you’re replacing your driveway, it’s the natural time to redo the crossover too. It sits on council land, needs Wyndham City Council consent, comes with a fee and a lead time, and has to be plain concrete where there’s a footpath.
