Coloured concrete
Colour oxides are mixed through the pour (integral colour) or applied to the surface, giving a consistent tone right through the slab in shades like charcoal, sandstone, slate grey and terracotta. Because the colour is in the concrete rather than on top of it, it wears far better than a painted surface. It’s the simplest way to move away from plain grey, and it pairs with most of the finishes below.
Stencil concrete
A removable pattern sheet is laid onto the wet concrete and a colour hardener applied over it, then lifted to leave crisp lines — mimicking pavers, brick, cobblestone or tile. Stencil is one of the most cost-effective decorative finishes, which is why it’s popular on driveways in the western estates where homeowners want a patterned look without the price of stamped work.
Stamped (imprinted) concrete
Patterned mats are pressed into the wet surface to replicate natural stone, slate, cobblestone or timber. Stamped concrete gives the closest imitation of premium materials at a fraction of the cost of the real thing, and combined with colour oxides it can be fully customised. It’s the higher end of the decorative range — more materials and finishing time — and it’s a genuine feature finish for driveways and alfresco areas.

Exposed aggregate

Choosing a finish that lasts, not just looks good
A decorative finish is only as good as the slab under it. Melbourne’s western suburbs sit largely on reactive clay — Class M through to Class H — which swells and shrinks with the seasons and moves the ground beneath a driveway. A beautiful stencil or stamped surface laid over a poorly prepared base will still crack, and a crack through a patterned finish is far more obvious than through plain grey.
So the decorative choice sits on top of the fundamentals: a compacted crushed-rock sub-base, reinforcement held at the correct height, adequate thickness, control joints placed to let the slab move, and the right falls so water runs off rather than pooling. Sealing and maintenance

Where a decorative finish stops — council crossovers
One thing worth knowing if you’re planning a decorative driveway: the section that crosses onto the road — the vehicle crossover — usually has to be plain concrete where there’s a footpath, under council rules. So your coloured, stencil or stamped finish runs up the driveway and stops at the property boundary. We handle the crossover consent as part of the job and set the job out so the transition looks deliberate.
