This ground swells when wet and shrinks when it dries, and the more reactive it is, the more it moves under a slab through the seasons. Why estate driveways here crack early
On this ground, a driveway laid straight onto dirt with mesh sitting on the base will crack — it’s not a matter of if. Proper work in Truganina means a compacted crushed-rock sub-base, reinforcement held at the correct height on bar chairs (not thrown on the ground), adequate slab thickness, control joints placed to let the concrete move, and — critically here — drainage and falls that keep water away from the slab.
