Concrete also contracts as it cures and keeps moving with temperature and ground moisture. Reinforcement holds a slab together but doesn’t make it crack-proof — nothing does. That’s what control joints are for: planned lines, cut to about a quarter of the slab’s depth, that give shrinkage somewhere tidy to go instead of cracking randomly across the surface. We place them around internal corners, garage entrances, changes in slab width and where new concrete meets old.
